2008 Annual Meeting (Saturday 20 September 2008)
This year's meeting is again a one-day event, coinciding with the University's Alumni Weekend, "Meeting Minds". Note that there is no need to register for the Alumni Weekend in order to attend the SOUE events, which are as usual free to members (apart from the cost of lunch if they choose to take it).
The Jenkin Lecture will be given by Professor David Clarke, who is retiring this year after many decades in the Department. Many members will have been taught by him in one capacity or another. He has been working for some years now on the continuous measurement of mass flow through pipes, by a clever dynamic method, which will feature in his lecture. His title is Control and the Coriolis Mass-flow meter.
The supporting talks will by two relatively recent graduates, on activities they have been involved in:
Daniel Walker (St Catherine's and Magdalen 1999-2006 and now with BP) will talk about some work on BP's Gulf of Mexico offshore installations to increase production and reduce the risk from hurricanes etc.
Richard Osborne (Trinity 1995-9 and now with Ricardos) will talk about the development of a petrol engine that can run either on a 2-stroke or a 4-stroke cycle, and switch between the two while running.
The timetable for the day is as follows:
